Conventions, Meetings and Mixers - Getting to Know You

Some conventions, such as Comic-con and Blizzcon, revolve around popular characters or fictional worlds. This gives participants the chance to dress up, to see upcoming products and to interact with the stars of their universe.

These types of “fan” conventions can draw big support and plenty of excitement, but other types of conventions can be equally successful even without the fantasy or product-related draw. Such gatherings don’t have to be about selling. In fact, many Web sites host conventions for an altogether different purpose.

Some sites may offer guest speakers, learning workshops and other activities and events designed to help participants perfect a craft or learn a skill at their conventions. This creates a learning atmosphere and even a feeling of success and achievement, a very compelling draw for visitors from all walks of life.

There are many different ways to make use of conventions, which can be a fun social event for all involved even when learning is the goal. For some sites, it’s a good idea to schedule conventions, meetings and mixers to give traffic real-world interaction and activity. But…is it a good idea for yours?
