Use Webstarts to Create a Free Site - Creating Your Webstarts Site
(Page 3 of 4 )
You’ve picked a template, you’ve entered your information and now you’re ready to start creating. Choose the title of your site (this will be displayed in your URL) and continue with a free site. If you’d like to own your own domain, you can sign up for this service with Webstarts also (any time you choose to do this, click the Upgrade link you‘ll find on your account page).
Owning a domain does cost money, and you can always simply maintain a free site instead. If you have little experience with having a Web site, you may want to start out with free pages before you pay for them (after all, you don’t know for sure that you’ll like being a Webmaster!).
Once you’ve created your site’s Web address, you’ll be taken straight to your operations panel. Here, you’ll see several different options: Email, Add Domain Name, Change Design, Text Effects and More, Make Money Online, Google Local Listing, Web Statistics and Email.
All of these options can be helpful to use as a Webmaster, but you’re not quite there yet! Start with the Edit Website option. This is where you’ll do all of your page creation.
The very simple HTML editor will greet you with a blank page, but don’t let this discourage you. This emptiness may seem overwhelming, as this represents a space you need to fill, but consider this the wonderful online canvas upon which you will create your Internet art. The first page you’ll be creating, of course, is Home. This will serve as the main page of your site, so include important introductory information, elements and links here.
Use the toolbars at the top to add images, links and text effects that will give your page just the look you want. From the File menu, you can update the description of your site (this will appear when your site is listed through Google), set a background image or design for the page and further customize elements of the site. Use the Tools menu to add a blog or other features to the page. If you do have custom code you’d like to insert, simply choose Edit HTML from the Insert menu.
Play around with your page editor as much as you like, and get comfortable with creating different elements on your page. With a free Webstarts account, you can create up to five free Web pages. You’ll also have the option of adding a blog, videos and other attention-getting elements to your site.
