10th February 2003 :: A Timely update from your StickySauce Webmasters

'The Newsletter' the face of information exchange brought to you by StickySauce.com

This month we have added The Newsletter archive for you to grab those issues you may have missed. Within the archive you will find The Newsletter available in 3 formats: .doc / HTML / Zip for your convenience.

2003 is now well under way, and no doubt over 80% of resolutions made only a few short weeks ago have already been broken. Are you guilty of making short-lived promises that you regretted? Maybe it was to stop smoking? Drinking? Building inaccessible Web pages? You are not alone!

Whilst there are countless agencies long since set-up to help you quit ‘the weed’ or to give up ‘the scourge of the working class’, (and I have been known to continue both); the many available resources to assist you in building accessible Web pages, do not get nearly enough exposure. But why?

I personally believe it is because these are generally (with few exceptions) presented as a long list of issues without too much guidance associated with the individual points, to assist you in bettering your design practices.

Far better to be able to discuss such issues as Accessibility, Usability and Validation with other like minded people to enable you to learn from their knowledge, experience and skill-set. This is after all the way we all learn at school, by exploring and exploiting the knowledge of others.

So I ask of you, don’t give up on that New Year resolution so easily, keep at it – the joy one gains from providing an Accessible result far outweighs the sweat and toil one puts into it.

True to his word, Irv has produced a host of new tools for us this month, and as always they are top quality and enhance any Web developers toolkit.

The Google tool. Will allow you to search in all 3 Google-servers with just one click. See for yourself the Google Dance - WWW WWW2 and WWW3.

Our .htaccess tool automatically generates the relevant files (.htaccess & .htpasswd) to password protect a directory within your Website. Input the username and password you require, plus the exact path of the directory you wish to protect and submit (NOTE: no data is stored on our servers during this action, hence your details are secure).

The StickyLink extractor tool will do exactly as it says on the tin. This tool will even list named anchors within a given page.

DHTML navigation bar generator. Ever seen those fancy DHTML navbars and attempted to recreate them, often with disasterous results? Try this on for size.

Authors: Writing an article or tutorial is a great way to network, share ideas and to promote your product/business/site.

StickySauce receives on average 5000 unique visitors per day so we guarantee your article/tutorial lots of exposure.

As a featured writer, your article can display links to your Website or gathering page.

We are looking to feature well written, well researched articles and tutorials on any topic within the stickysauce.com Website.

Simply e-mail Irv with the url to your article,
we will review it and could post your article on StickySauce within 24 hours.

StickyCrawler. The crawler only searches the Computer and Internet sections of each directory providing you with relevant tech and web development results...

StickyHost directory to find and compare web hosting companies in popular categories such as Dedicated, Unix/Linux, ecommerce, Windows, NT, Reseller and more...

As a little light relief this month I have included a snippet of the General chat Forum on the right, where you would normally find the main forum links.

We would like to hear your views on the site, the Forums and any other issue you wish to impart - so please feel free to utilise the StickySauce.com Forums or e-mail us directly

...general chat (edited for brevity, but kept in context)

"is Web design a healthy activity"?

Alan: Is web design a healthy activity? Or is sitting all day gazing at that screen becoming a sedentory occupation?

Wicksie: Ford and Harrison seem a tad eccentric to me ...they are using their names rather cleverly
Harrison&Ford Moves is not dissimilar to Harrison Ford Movies

Pob: my biggest injury (at the moment) is a repetetive strain in my shoulder from using the mouse too much. I get less severe injuries at karate, so I think we should reclasify web design as a dangerous sport

Alan: Damn it, I thought the names seemed familiar but could not place the context

    TJzone: no!

Dave68: Think I will stick with the walking thanks Alan. Strange people running that site you mentioned

Chris: I've been known to;Drink 40 cups of coffee a day while sitting in front of my machine. Smoke 40 ciggarettes a day while sitting in front of my machine. Munch through Pizza's, kebab's, crips etc.. while sitting in front of my machine

Gregg: Makes you think twice before sitting to long

Chris: You's are probably going to say I'm a hypocondriac, but my legs sometimes lock

Dave68: Do you still have the use of your legs Chris?

Chris: Aye dave, but every now and then they do some funny things and that's not the drink either

Dave68: Best going the doctors Chris. The worst that could happen is.....nah I won't say it

Gregg: I'll email my home address so that you can leave your $$$$$$$$$ to me

Chris: Nah I'll be alright. Might suffer when I'm an old man though

Verbal: Everyday someone die's of this cause in south-korea

Wicksie: that will at least show the world that to be #1 in broadband takeup may not be a good thing

    What's new... (Added 10th February 03)
