    Your Top 10 SEO Don`ts

The world of search engine optimization, or SEO, can be complex. There are a lot of people who want to tell you what you should do in order to improve your rankings. You'll find advice by the barrel full on what you need to do, but less on what you should avoid. This article goes some way toward remedying that situation.

You may think that not hearing about what you shouldn't do is not much of a big deal, but it really can be a problem. If you follow a good idea to a bad end, you can kill your rankings very quickly. That is why today we are going to take a look at your top 10 don’ts for search engine optimization.

SEO Do Not Number One: Do Not Ignore Where You Are Linking To

As a general rule, creating outbound links, or links from your site to another site, is a very good thing in the world of SEO. Like many things in this world, it is important to do it properly. If you do it wrong you can end up reversing all of your hard work thus far.

The issues with linking strategy involve watching where you are linking to. There are, in general, a few key areas that you need to be worried about when you are choosing which sites you should link to and which you should pass on by. What are these target areas?

    1. Sites that have been categorized as a bad neighborhood by a search engine. These are sites that have been penalized for over linking or for using links inappropriately. How do you spot one of these sites before you link? The simplest way is to search for the domain name (not the URL) in an engine. If it does not show up, it has been blacklisted.

    2. Adult sites. Aside from the fact that you may offend your readers and lose them, you run the risk of getting your site moved into that category if you have too many links to this type of site. There is no magic number here, but unless your site is truly adult, you need to be very cautious with these links.

    3. Blackholes. This is a term for sites that get links without giving them in return. Sure, it will not really damage your SEO, but it does not get you anything. Be wary of sites with no out bounds, or only “no follow” out bound links. One of the biggest in that category is Twitter, which does all of its links as no follow, as well as some major news sites.
