Search Engine Nightmares: Grammatical Errors and Misspelled Keywords - Keyword Errors

Anyone can make a mistake, and this truth is never more evident than on the Internet. Casual Web surfers create misspellings all the time -- so much so, in fact, that many sites have learned how to take advantage of it by capitalizing on very commonly misspelled words. These companies focus on a very common misspelling, sweeping up all the accidentally-diverted traffic. And they enjoy lots of extra hits because of it. Think about how quickly most people surf online, and you’ll realize that misspellings are probably happening every single minute. Product names, celebrities, cities, or common words, errors are happening all the time -- quite literally.

In some cases, it may be hurting your traffic. Some of your words, while highly sought-after, could be difficult to spell correctly. So…where does all your traffic go, and how do you change it up to help them find the right pages?

    Commonly Misspelled

You’ve worked hard to create a professional-looking, sleek Web site. By no means should you ruin the readability of your pages by junking everything up with a lot of misspelled keywords. You can, however, include these misspellings in your META tags. For the most part, planting misspellings on purpose will only help you if used in words which are quite commonly misspelled. Look at the keywords you’re featuring, think about how they could be easily misspelled, and include these misspellings in your META.

Think about the errors you’ve made when creating content for your pages, or searching for sites on the Internet. What do you misspell when you’re doing a search? Chances are, other people have the same trouble with certain words that you’ve experienced. If you want to take your misspellings further, look for lists of commonly misspelled words (Your Dictionary,, is pictured below). You’ll notice that many letter combinations commonly come up in misspellings -- something to remember when you’re working on search engine optimization for your site.
