Latest Buzz on Search Engines
It's pretty hard to obtain a top ten position in the search engines today. A year ago or
more, all you had to do is find the right keyword density to get your listings to the top.
With software like "Web Position," the average webmaster could achieve a top ten position
without out any outside help.
Today the criteria for a top ten position has changed quite dramatically. Since everyday
people were given the tools to rank their pages higher, the search engines retrieved their
sites. Unfortunately, their site really didn't deal with the information that the web
searcher wanted. Both the search engines and the web surfer were upset with the large amount of "junk" pages that were being retrieved.
Actions were taken to prevent this. Webmasters using common SPAMMING techniques such as "keyword stuffing" would be penalized or banned from the engines. Directories, such as Yahoo where humans index the webpages became popular. In case you haven't heard, the latest factor in top ten positioning is link popularity.
Most search engines use link popularity in someway to determine the a sites popularity. However, linking to just any site won't necessarily help. Greater weight is given to sites that are linked with popular site. So for instance, being linked with a top ten ranking site would give you a much greater relevancy than being linked with a site that isn't in the top 100.
There also is a service called "Direct Hit." Direct Hit gives a rank to the pages that a search
engine retrieved. The rank is determined by the number of times that web surfers click on the pages. So the pages that are clicked on more should be more relevant. These pages are given a better rank.
So what does all of this mean? Well these are changing and it isn't as simple to get a high ranking. Should you give up? No.
Creating good reciprocal links should be a good part of you campaign. When you seek to go after these links, you don't want to link with sites that will bring you three visitors a month, you want the high traffic sites. So keep on trying to get the big links. Number one, it will bring you some good qualified traffic. Secondly, it will give you a boost over your competition in attaining a better ranking.
You also want to make sure you pick the right keywords for your site. If you focus on keywords that aren't well related to your site, services link Direct Hit might cause you some harm. However, if you have good keywords and an interesting site you should get a higher ranking. Remember that being in the top ten isn't the only part in getting more visitors. You
have to have a headline that compels the surfer to enter your site! Pay a lot of attention to this. This is how Direct Hit will be able to help you out. Get their attention, create a description packed with benefits your site has for the surfer.
Although search engines are changing, this doesn't mean there isn't room for the little man in the top ten. Focus on getting those crucial links, use software such as WebPosition to help you get a better ranking and keeping on testing to find the best pulling headline and description to use on you webpages. Free classifieds are great for testing headlines! Most of all, don't rely on search engines as you main source of traffic. Although achieving a top ten position is possible, it takes a lot of time and experimentation. So don't spend all of your
time marketing with the search engines.
