Do You Know Your Demographic?
You’re supposed to market your site and tailor your pages to your audience…but what if you don’t know who that is? How can you start to target your visitors if you don’t really know who they are? It all boils down to one important question for any web master: do you know your demographic?
Teenagers don’t often surf the same Web sites as their parents; work-at-home mothers probably won’t cruise the same pages as investment bankers. It’s a big, wide Web out there, and your site appeals to one small piece of it. But what if you’re not sure just who you’re tempting with those carefully-designed pages? What if you don’t know your demographic?
Track Your Traffic
Anyone can find a simple online code which will create a Web site counter. With this tool, you can log onto your site at any time and see exactly how many times people have viewed your pages. Unfortunately, that’s all you’ll be able to see -- a single number. This tells you nothing at all about where your traffic is coming from and what keywords they’re using to find you.
Find a better way to track your traffic, because simple counters won’t give you any information about your demographic. Many Web sites offer site tracking that’s much more complex than a simple counter, tracking which will tell you a great deal about the visitors your pages seem to compel. There are free as well as paid services out there which provide extensive tracking and highly detailed reports on your traffic.
