Creating an Online Portfolio - Content

Keep in mind the purpose of creating a portfolio. Your portfolio, be it online or otherwise, is a collection of professional content. Writers might choose to display published articles; graphic designers will include full-color copies of ads they’ve created; photographers will offer glossy pictures. No one knows the work you do better than you, so you should already know how to best display your professional talents. It’s important to use your best and most high-profile pieces to make up a professional portfolio. You should display pieces which show off a wide range of your capabilities and/or services.

You should have a single portfolio which shows off the variety of what you can do, as opposed to creating several different portfolios designed to highlight a particular aspect of your work. You can draw a particular client or employer’s attention to a certain aspect of the portfolio to better show how you can benefit the specific company or project at hand, but you should not ignore all your other professional achievements and accomplishments. It’s much, much easier to focus on creating one great portfolio that shows off how well-rounded and experienced you really are. You never know when one opportunity could lead to the next, so be sure not to limit yourself.

The professional content you display in your online portfolio must be easy to access via the Internet. In many cases, you will want your online portfolio to exhibit work you’ve completed online. An online portfolio is very much a point of reference for potential clients and employers. It is your calling card as much as it is a collection of your professional projects. Since you’re displaying this work online, it’s only natural to display online projects. It’s very simple to show off your online efforts as well, since you’ll need to do little more than create links.

You can also showcase work which you created in hard copy, such as clips published by print media and in other offline venues. For each project that you’re showing off, create a brand-new Web page that‘s dedicated solely to that single piece of content. You absolutely don’t want to force people into downloading files. In most cases, they will simply choose not to download anything and end up missing out on the things you wanted them to see. Make the page attractive and easy to navigate. Remember, this is your professional portfolio; you should take care to present it professionally.
