    URL Redirection - Pranks

This is one of those things I don't really recommend doing. That being said, sometimes people will purchase a domain name that is insulting, and have it redirect to a person's website. An example of this would be if I purchased the domain Idiot(dot)com and had it redirect visitors to Al Gore's website.

    Phishing

Another black hat area of URL redirection is using the technique to trick visitors into giving up personal information or redirecting them to a website with malicious code. The method calls for the perpetrator to create a web page that looks similar to a popular site, such as a banking website, and when the user clicks on certain links on the page, they get redirected to a page with a form they must fill out or a page with hidden code that implants a Trojan.

    Deceiving Search Engines

There was a time when you could attempt to steal a person's page rank via redirecting URLs, but this is no longer really the case. The vast majority of the time if you try this technique you will wind up with a penalty, or worse, banned from the major search engine indexes.

    Conclusion

That concludes the first part of this series. I know you are anxious to get your hands on the meat and potatoes of this topic, and learn to actually do page redirections. Well never fear. In our next episode we will be doing just that. So come back often.

    Till then...
