    An SEO Glossary for Beginners

Getting started in the world of SEO, or search engine optimization can be a bit tricky. Even if you are smart enough to avoid some of the inherent pitfalls in this are, which are not always immediately obvious, there is still one more hurdle. That hurdle is the language of SEO. Keep reading for a primer.

Like any specialized body of knowledge, SEO has its own special set of forms, abbreviations and acronyms attached to it. If you want to understand what is going on, then you will have to understand the terms being used. Luckily, you have just stumbled upon a resource that will help you to understand: a glossary of SEO terms with definitions in plain English.

All of the terms are in alphabetical order, which will make them very easy for you to find. Feel free to look through the list to find only the terms that you need, or read them from start to finish. Either way, they can help you to get what you need.

Please note: theoretical terms not included.

There are some terms that have not been included in this glossary intentionally. Terms like Google Sandbox, for example. These terms were excluded because their existence can not be proven. They exist mostly because search engines do not share their algorithms. This leads to all kinds of speculation, which creates these terms.

Why Do Search Engines Hide Their Formulas?

    Well, for a few reasons:

    1. To keep people from scamming the ranking and artificially inflating their site.

    2. To keep their rankings unique. Other companies would copy successful formulas.

    Why is SEO Important?

Because search engines are how visitors find your site. At least it is one of the most direct and pragmatic ways. Not too mention that, unlike other ways, this is very easy to see, and compare, as opposed to word of mouth, which is very hard to track or predict accurately.

Now, without any further ado, let's get on with the terms.
