LiveJournal: Blogs for All - How to Join LiveJournal

Want to join LiveJournal and all its various communities? Signing up for a free account is a relatively quick and simple procedure. From the home page, you can click the “Create an Account” link appearing in the right-hand corner. You can also enter the username you’d like to use into the “Create a Journal” box.

Simply click to get started, and you’ll move on to a sign-up form (pictured below) where you choose a password, enter your birth date and verify your humanity (LiveJournal, like many sites, uses a security feature to reduce on-site spam. This means you’ll have to enter the letters appearing in the security box to create the account).

Once you verify who you are, provide an email address and pick a username and password, you’re on your way to creating an online blog anyone can view. It’s time for the next step in your LiveJournal process.

Use the radial buttons on the right to choose a theme for your blog. With these templates, you can create a look that appeals to your own aesthetic, making your page feel even more personal. You’ll also pick a name for your blog (My Journal, for example), name your gender if you like and enter information about yourself. You’ll note spaces for music, movies/TV, hobbies, books and other, as well as a description box. You can choose to leave all of this blank.

LiveJournal uses the information to help others find your blog, and to help you find blogs or groups who express interests similar to your own. If you’d like to interact with the rest of the LJ community, it’s a good idea to include this information with your profile.

The next screen in the account creation process will give you the option of upgrading your account. LiveJournal blogs are free. However, you can buy an upgrade to enjoy even more features of the site. Paid accounts, for instance, have access to more themes for their blogs and even have the option of creating a custom design. You’ll have no advertising on your blog and more space with an upgraded account as well.

The cost is $19.95 USD for one year. If you choose not to exercise this option, look for a small link under the box reading “Not today, thanks” and continue to the next step.

Now you’ve created an account with LiveJournal. So…what’s next?
