GoDaddy Hosting Server Configuration for WordPress - Getting Started

To formally start, click the "Use Credit" link. On your right there will be a message that looks like this:

    SET-UP FREE ACCOUNT:

And below it shows your domain and two crucial options:

    1. Free Windows Hosting

    2. Free Linux Hosting

Since WordPress runs on Linux/PHP, select the "Free Linux Hosting" and then click "Continue." Next, click on "My Hosting Account" under "Hosting & Servers." After this, click "Setup Account."

This last click will bring you to the Hosting Control Center - Account setup. You are then required to read the "License" first, and then click on "I have read and agree to the Hosting Service Agreement."

After that, you are required to enter the login details. It is important to follow security measures, such as having more difficult login details. The objective is to make it difficult to crack, in case someone tries to hack your website.

After successfully setting up your log-in details, GoDaddy will show you the "Account Details." The purpose is for you to confirm the information you have entered before. Please review the information and jot down the information if you need to.

When all information is correct, press "NEXT." The hosting setup will ask for PHP versions; there are two options here:

    1. PHP 4.x

    2. PHP 5.x

It is highly important to correctly set the PHP version so that things will run smoothly during WordPress installation. Based on the information I gave you above, the minimum requirement is PHP version 4.3 or greater. So checking PHP 4.x is fine.

As of August 2008, the latest version is WordPress 2.6.1, which will require PHP version 4.3 or greater [WordPress is currently up to 2.7.1, so check carefully. --Ed]. If you select PHP 5.x in the setup, it will create problems; for example, the server will not recognize the htaccess, or 404 pages (page not found) will be treated as 200 status (OK). Much worse, this will negatively affect the ability of search engines to crawl the site.

After selecting the PHP versions, a confirmation page will be shown using your username, domain, and the PHP version. After all of this is done, click "Finish."

Finally, GoDaddy will show this information: "Current Hosting Account Status: Pending Setup." To know the status, you can click "View Account List" and view the status of the setup.

When you see "Pending setup," your hosting account is not yet ready to receive WordPress. In the meantime, you can log out of your account and go to the next phase of the setup.
