A Beginner`s Guide to Self Hosting Your Blog - Cost

Will self hosting be cheaper than paid hosting?

Well, that depends. If you do not need to buy anything in order to self host, and you do not have to pay a professional helper, then self hosting can be significantly less expensive then paying a host.

If, however, you will have to buy any of the above-mentioned items, then self hosting could end up being a lot more expensive than third-party hosting. At least it will be for a very long time. Eventually, your costs to self host could be surpassed by the costs of the equipment, energy and time, but it is unlikely that would take years.

The determination of how cost effective choosing to host your own site will be is largely a factor of those issues. Basically, for the average blogger, the answer will likely be that self-hosting is more expensive, but for a select group it will be the better choice.

If it is not less expensive, why would I want to self host?

You might choose to self host if you have a vision for your blog that is radically different from the norm. You may also choose to do so if you require total control over your site and its hosting. This is the ultimate in control if you are worried about site security. True, it is a concern in a limited amount of situations, but ones that are worth mentioning.
